NZ Section New Speakers Contest – 10 June 2009
The June meeting of the NZ Section was the annual new speakers’ meeting. The evening saw three speakers tackle very different subjects in a very confident and competent way. The first speaker was Tim Wright from CHH Penrose, who described the “Stickie Situation” at the Penrose mill in an amusing presentation describing good “Kiwi Innovation” in action finding a solution to “flying stickies”. The second speaker was Todd Saddleton of Norske Skog Tasman. Todd described the pulp storage model he had developed to maximise benefits for power usage timing to avoid peak charges by organising the downtime in the RMP and TMP mills at Tasman. He described the morphing of the initial model from its academic beginnings to an effective mill personnel friendly cost saving tool. The third speaker was Jonas Hoffmann-Vocke who is a PhD student from Waikato. His PhD is centred on the efficient design of air heaters used in Pulp & Paper as well as the dairy industry. Jonas also gave a confident well presented delivery taking the audience through the effects of maldistribution of the air stream through an air heater. The consequences of some of his work are already included in the design of air heaters for Fonterra. All three speakers were excellent, making the judges’ decision a difficult one. The winner was Todd Saddleton. As the winner of the NZ Section Competition, Todd received a trophy and a travel grant and complementary conference registration to attend the Appita New Speakers’ Competition at the 2010 Appita Conference in Melbourne. Both Tim and Jonas received a cash prize as runners-up. Thank you to the sponsors of the 2009 Competition: BOC, Chemiplas NZ Ltd, Metso Paper, Cleveland Process Automation Ltd, RTM Luzenac and Acu Cel.
