Symposium - ‘Sustainability in a carbon-regulated world – what is actually happening?’

Tuesday 20 April - Wednesday 22nd April 2010

This will attempt to answer some of the questions raised by speakers and delegates at the 2009 Symposium, and will feature invited presentations over two days. Day one, Tuesday 20 April, will be on ‘Sustainable Processes and Technology’. The morning session will cover Biomass Processing, and look at pelletising biomass, biofuels, bioenergy and competition for end uses, and the afternoon will look at ‘Sustainability’, with topics such as transport, forests, raw materials, recycling and so on.

The second day of the Symposium is on ‘Sustainable Business’. The morning will be on policy and legislation’, and will be an update on where emissions trading is heading post-Copenhagen. It will also deal with life-cycle issues, and will look at the unintended consequences of legislation, such as the USA situation where black liquor is being ‘doctored’ with diesel fuel to attract government subsidies as fuel. The afternoon will look into the future, speculating on what the future pulp and paper mill will look like, and what is likely to happen in Australia as a result of the Pulp and paper industry Strategy Review recently announced by the Australian Government.
